The extensive work to recover the train that derailed between Iggesund and Hudiksvall is underway. The rearmost carriage, which was on the steepest slope, is lifted off to be inspected on the ground.

– It hangs in the air in the cranes above the slide, says Magnus Olsson, who is in charge of the accident site at the Swedish Transport Administration at 11 o’clock.

The hope is that all four wagons will be able to be lifted onto the rail, some distance away where it is intact, and driven to Hudiksvall at low speed.

According to Magnus Olsson, today’s salvage work has so far gone smoothly, although soft ground and water caused some difficulties when temporary roads were built to get in with vehicles and cranes.

An all-terrain tow truck, known from the television program “Heroes of the Road”, is involved in the lifting operation.

– It is a bit spectacular because it can go into the forest, says Anna-Pia Lingemyr, head of unit at the Swedish Transport Administration.

Work is progressing slowly but if all goes according to plan the rail should be fully restored by Friday.

– You do it very slowly and carefully so you constantly check how things are moving, says Anna-Pia Lingemyr, head of unit at the Swedish Transport Administration.
