World Championship silver. WC gold. World Championship silver.

Formula promise Tuukka Taponen the results in the World Karting Championships are of guaranteed quality year after year. The latest example of this was seen on Sunday, when the 15-year-old Finnish talent won the World Championship silver in the OK class (main class) of karting in Sarno, Italy.

A year ago, Tapose became the first Finn to win the karting world championship. In 2020, he won OK Junior silver in the junior category.

Taponen started Sunday’s final race from the second grid, but dropped to third at the start. However, the Finn fought his way back. A Brazilian driver three years older than Tapo drove to the championship Matheu Morgatto.

Taponen left hard scalps behind during the weekend. One such was the gem of Red Bull’s junior academy Arvid Lindblad.

Many F1 drivers have participated in the karting World Cup at the beginning of their motorsport career. In the 2000s, only one of the drivers who made it to the F1 series has won two medals in the main class of karting. It is a Dutchman who recently debuted in F1 Nyck De Vries. He drove to two consecutive championships in 2010 and 2011.

– Not many people in the world have been able to win three medals in consecutive years. It’s a great thing, Taponen admits to Urheilu.

Will there be an invitation from Maranello?

Taponen recently thought about his future. The alternative was to continue in karting for one more season or to switch to formulas. He and his background team settled on the first option.

How has this year been?

– In terms of karting, it was a somewhat similar year to last year. At the beginning of the season, the competitions started well, but then there was a slight dip. It was a bit difficult to get a result in the EC series, but the end of the season started to bring better success.

Taponen turns 16 in October. The goal for the near future of the youngster from Lohja is clear.

– This was the last karting race of this season. Then you’ll know if you’ll ever have to run some races when you’re older. Now let’s focus on Formula Four’s tests for the rest of the season. Next year, the plan is to run a formula four race, but nothing has been decided yet.

According to Taponen, there are places. His binoculars have at least the Italian or Spanish F4 series.

A year ago, Taponen was enrolled in Ferrari’s junior academy, which has been attended by this season’s World Championship runner-up Charles Leclerc. Taponen was in the five-day tests, but in the end was narrowly left out of the strict screening.

According to Taponen, Maranello has not yet been included in this year’s test camp.

– If there is a place to camp there, of course we will go there and I will do my best.
