National education and poverty policies are often blamed for increasing inequality in education. Yet solutions can be worked on at a local level, says PvdA councilor Valentijn Brinkman in Baarn. The municipality, which has a reputation for having many wealthy residents, also has people who could use help, he says. “Mark Rutte once said that you have an advantage if you come from Baarn, but that is not entirely true. It is not without reason that we have appointed a poverty director here. There are plenty of families who want tutoring for their child, but cannot afford it .”
