Poland’s newly elected Prime Minister Donald Tusk has taken the oath of office and formally assumed his new post. The ceremony was held at the Presidential Palace in Warsaw early on Wednesday. The ministers who are part of Tusk’s government have also been sworn in.
The ceremony marks the end of the eight-year rule of the nationalist right-wing Law and Justice (PIS) party and a time when Poland often had disputes with Brussels. Tusk has promised to restore relations with the EU and a gathering of forces in support of Ukraine.
Liberal Tusk, who was permanent president of the European Council between 2014 and 2019 and prime minister in his home country before that, leads a pro-EU alliance called the Citizens’ Coalition. It won a majority of seats in parliament in the October election. Complicated procedural issues, however, mean that the change of power has been delayed until now.
Donald Tusk is expected to attend the EU summit in Brussels on Thursday and Friday.
