The Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 brought the NATO issue to the fore. Just over three months later, on 18 May 2022, Sweden submitted an official NATO application.
Most member states said yes to Sweden’s entry, but not Turkey and Hungary. Now, over a year and a half later, Turkey has said yes to Sweden’s NATO entry. But that doesn’t mean we’re involved, so what does the process actually look like?

All member states must say yes
All NATO countries must approve new members before they can join. Now it is the Hungarian parliament’s turn to approve Sweden.
On Tuesday, the Prime Minister of Hungary invited Viktor Orbán, in Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson for discussions about the membership. It is unfortunately unclear whether there will be any such meeting before the leaders meet at the EU summit in Brussels in a week.

Sweden needs to submit documents to the United States
After all NATO countries have approved Sweden’s application, the next step is for the decision to be ratified in the United States, since NATO’s founding treaty is located at the American State Department. This means that Sweden must submit an accession document and when it is ready, we are officially members.
Then the Swedish flag is raised
The process is completed when the Swedish flag is raised next to the other 31 NATO countries. There is an opportunity for this to happen on two occasions this spring. Either at the NATO defense ministers’ meeting in Brussels on February 14 – 15, or on April 4 at NATO’s 75th anniversary.
