Turkey announces resumption of search for gas deposits in the Mediterranean. According to the Turkish Ministry of Energy, drilling will begin on August 9, with the vessel Abdulhamid.

The ship leaves the port of Mersin for the resumed drilling for gas, the ministry writes in the statement.

Previous searches for gas deposits in the Mediterranean have led to heated exchanges between Turkey and the EU, as these are carried out near the divided Cyprus.

Turkey disputes maritime boundaries in the area, while the EU came close to imposing sanctions on Turkey in 2020 over the test drilling.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when the Turkish military intervened in the northern part of the island after a local coup d’état supported by the then Greek military dictatorship.

The Greek-speaking part of Cyprus is a member of the EU.
