Turkey prepares for elections in the ruins of the earthquake

After the great earthquake in 1999, there was a change of government in Turkey. The February earthquake may have killed three times as many people in Turkey and Syria.

– That makes the question of how the rescue operation was carried out so loaded. It was late and poorly planned. The opposition is now constantly highlighting how the government failed with the rescue effort, says Stefan Åsberg.

Half a million people are estimated to have left the southern province of Hatay, where large parts of the buildings lie in ruins.

– You are reminded of the disaster at every intersection, on every road. It is so comprehensive that it is difficult to describe, says Stefan Åsberg.

Authorities expect 100,000 to 200,000 people to return to Hatay to vote, as you must vote where you are registered in Turkey. With the local airport closed it will most likely lead to chaos on the roads and people will have to spend the night in barracks and in their cars just to get to the polls.
