Turkey opens its embassy in Syria, which has been closed for more than a decade | News in brief

Turkey closed its embassy in Damascus in 2012.

Turkey will open its embassy in the Syrian capital Damascus, which has been closed for more than a decade, on Saturday, the Turkish foreign minister said Hakan Fida in a television interview on Friday.

The mission’s staff and temporary administrator have already traveled to Syria, and the mission’s operations are scheduled to begin as soon as Saturday.

The Anadolu news agency already reported on Thursday that Turkey’s temporary charge d’affaires in Syria has been appointed Burhan Koroglu. Koroglu was appointed as the Turkish ambassador to Mauritania only a year ago. Anadolu did not say how long Koroglu’s temporary appointment will last.

Turkey closed its Syrian embassy in March 2012, a year after the Syrian civil war began.
