For the time being, Turkey has canceled the February tripartite negotiations on the ratification of Finland’s and Sweden’s NATO membership. The negotiations were to continue in Brussels, and NATO’s Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg was to participate in them.

  • This is an updated news story to which information is added.
  • The cancellation only applies to the February meeting, not the entire negotiation process.

The tripartite negotiations are based on a memorandum of understanding that Finland, Sweden and Turkey accepted in the summer of 2022 in connection with the NATO summit in Madrid.

In it, Finland and Sweden condemn terrorism and promise their support in combating threats to Turkey’s national security.

However, Turkey has not been satisfied and has, among other things, demanded the extradition of persons it considers to be terrorists.

Niinistö: The solution is in the hands of the Turkish president

President of the Republic visiting Ukraine Sauli Niinistö believes that the ratification of NATO membership will still take place.

According to Niinistö, the solution to the ratification of Finland’s NATO membership would not have come about in official-level tripartite negotiations, but the solution lies with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Niinistö does not consider the situation hopeless.

This is what the smoothing of Turkey is all about

Turkey is upset that the Swedish government did not prevent the demonstration organized in front of the Turkish embassy in Stockholm on Saturday, in which the far-right Rasmus Paludan burned the Koran, the Muslim holy book.

Turkish President Erdoğan said on Monday, January 23 that it is pointless for Sweden to wait for Turkey’s support for its NATO membership.

Already earlier, Turkey reacted strongly when a group opposing Sweden’s NATO membership and supporting the Syrian Kurds hung a doll resembling Erdoğan by its feet in Stockholm.

Turkey has also demanded that Finland and Sweden hand over “terrorists” to the country.

However, the number of persons required to be handed over has varied. Just over a week ago, a total of 130 were required, but at one point there were 73 to be handed over in Sweden alone, and at least once Erdoğan has talked about a hundred to be handed over.
