With 26 percent in September’s parliamentary elections, the Brothers of Italy became the country’s largest party. Giorgia Meloni was thus assigned the leadership role in a government coalition with Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia party and the Lega party, led by Matteo Salvini. However, forming a government has proven to be no easy task. Above all, it is with a certain government colleague that it cracks a little extra.
– Silvio Berlusconi has argued in front of the open curtain and created headlines. He is an old fox in politics and used to getting his way, says Jennifer Wegerup, SVT’s Italy correspondent.
No to ministerial proposals
Among other things, Giorgia Meloni has said no to all the names that Silvio Berlusconi proposed for ministerial posts, many of which were his own friends and acquaintances. According to Meloni, this government has “the eyes of the world on it”, not least given the party’s controversial post-fascist background.
– She has therefore said that all ministers must be ministers at the highest level, says Jennifer Wegerup.
