Martin Regborn was overwhelming in the men’s WC orienteering sprint in Edinburgh, where the Swede took a 23-second lead to second best.

Joined the Swiss delegation Tino Polsini surprised with the World Championship silver before the Swedish duo Emil SvenskGustav Bergman.

Tuomas Heikkilä was eighth as the best Finn, losing 47 seconds to the winner. The World Cup medal was 20 seconds away from him.

– There was quite a lot of good in the performance, but at the end, a couple of route choices were left to dig a little. After that long gap, I didn’t notice a single more direct route, which in a way affected two tick intervals.

– It may be that the medal went to him today, but it’s still good to continue the week ahead. Good starts are still ahead. With confidence towards the continuation and a little sharpening in route choices, Heikkilä told Urheilu.

Miika Kirmula was the 14th and Akseli Ruohola 23:s.

The women’s world championship also went to Sweden, when they once again found top form for the prestigious competition Tove Alexandersson took his by a margin of 15 seconds.

The dullest medals went to Switzerland when Simona Aebersold was another and Natalia Gemperle third.

After a challenging training season, the best Finnish woman of the day, ranked 12th Inka Nurminen was satisfied with the day’s performance, even though a top 10 finish was close.

– Last season went really well. Since then there have been many problems. The season did not get off to an easy start. I’m really happy that I was able to perform so well here in the big games, Nurminen mused.

The sprint orienteering world championships in Scotland will take place from 12 to 16 July. There are three competition distances: individual sprint, sprint relay and Knock-Out sprint.
