The researchers have accessed the police’s tsunami register of approximately 16,030 Swedish people who survived the tsunami in Southeast Asia in 2004.
Information from Statistics Norway has also been used to create so-called statistical twins that make up the control group.
A survey among the tsunami survivors and control group was conducted in 2023.
Uppsala University and researchers from Stockholm University are behind the study.
All data is anonymized and the study has undergone ethics reviews.
Parts of the study have been published in a scientific journal, others are under production or review by research colleagues before publication.
Some conclusions: Tsunami survivors have an increased voter turnout and according to the research, it is driven by both a dissatisfaction with the Social Democratic government’s crisis management after the tsunami, but also by a post-traumatic development – that after going through a disaster you develop as a person, for example by wanting be involved and contribute to society to a greater extent. It has also been seen that more people are further educated and therefore receive higher wages.
