Trymacs apologizes for employee pay statement, but it rings hollow

The German Twitch streamer Maximilian “Trymacs” Stemmler has apologized for his statement about what editors in Germany should earn. He says he didn’t recognize himself in his statement and believes lack of sleep and unprocessed, traumatic experiences from 2017 and 2018 contributed to this. But some fans think his statement is hollow.

For which statements does Trymacs apologize? Trymacs does not name any specific statements for which he would like to apologize, but has withdrawn the entire reaction video and deleted it from the Internet.

In the video we reported on on MeinMMO, he explained, among other things:

  • He gave his editor a percentage of the growth of his channel, but fired them when his YouTube channel grew so much that they demanded more than €10,000 a month in salary
  • He also said that cutters shouldn’t be paid so well because many of them can do their job and the demands aren’t that high. Supply and demand determined what cutters could earn. As soon as editors become too greedy, they can be replaced by others who get a fixed salary and are happy with it.
  • He had repeatedly expressed his incomprehension that his position was not understood. He pays well, but in his eyes it’s just crazy when editors earn so much money. If a channel generates €100,000, no editor can get a percentage share of it. That’s totally crazy.

Trymacs blames statements on unprocessed conflicts

This is how he explains his failure: In a new video, Trymacs now gives the impression that he doesn’t really see where he went wrong. But he noticed how badly his views were received by his viewers.

He says he read an incredible number of the over 2,000 comments and that made him realize that he must have been wrong. He says the statement also arose from a lack of sleep. He had previously played a lot of Factorio.

He didn’t recognize himself in his statement:

I was full of myself – I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t recognize myself. It was all completely exaggerated, completely blocked, nothing was allowed, not reflected.

In addition, “unprocessed feelings and conflicts” from his early days surfaced here. He says that in the early days of Fortnite there was a conflict with his editors at the time, which then led to their dismissal.

He is now critical of his role in the dispute. He wasn’t a good boss back then, didn’t communicate well and avoided problems.

He never processed this whole conflict and it came up when he spoke about the topic again.

Trymacs got off to a flying start on Twitch. In 2016, his channel grew to an average of 2,420 viewers. In 2017, he tripled his Twitch channel to 8,347 viewers. Back then he mainly played Clash Royale. In 2018 he switched to Fortnite and was able to consolidate the high number of viewers on Twitch. Fortnite acted like an accelerant on YouTube: To date, 4 of his 5 most successful videos on YouTube are about Fortnite.

Trymacs portrays former editors as unreliable nouveau riche, and limits that too

What seems strange? In the statement he accuses the editors at the time of being unreliable. All the money went to their heads and they worked more and more unreliably, extended their vacation without notice or took sick days and rarely met the deadlines for videos.

In a second video on YouTube, “My old editor called me after 5 years…” he also limits this criticism. He was a good, competent editor and also a top man. And you were also very young there. The whole thing was eaten.

Feels 18 and has just finished high school

How old was he then? Trymacs says: At that time he “felt like he was 18” and had just finished high school. In fact, 2017/2018 was already 23 and 24 years old. It had been a while since graduation.

Fans think the admission of guilt is good, but the content of the statement is hollow

How is Trymacs’ statement received? The statement seems a bit hollow in terms of content, as many people notice on YouTube. It’s generally good that Trymacs admits so comprehensively that it was wrong.

But one would have liked him to specifically criticize what was wrong at his point and how he sees the conflict differently now. Because he obviously hasn’t grasped the actual topic and doesn’t say a word about it. Although he withdraws all previous positions, he does not name any new ones.

    Trymacs’ business model provides:

  • That an editor shares a percentage of the success of a channel and therefore bears the entire risk if the channel stagnates or does poorly
  • But if the channel is successful, his salary will suddenly be capped
  • The model brings the streamer all the advantages, but expects the editor to take a risk, which doesn’t fully pay off if it’s successful.

Given the business model, it is apparently okay for the streamer if the editor earns nothing at all in a bad month. But as soon as he earns “a lot” and the risk pays off, intervention must be made and the salary regulated, because it cannot be the case that an editor “earns more than a chief physician” – that the streamer himself earns much more than a chief physician, But apparently it’s not a problem at all and is hidden.

Trymacs doesn’t say a word about this aspect of the criticism in its statement. In his apology he doesn’t specify where he was wrong, but his statement boils down to: “I take everything back and say the opposite.”

Although people on YouTube generally think it’s great and unusual that a streamer even admits his guilt, it seems to many users as if Trymacs was just saying, “Oh my God, they all hate me – I’m having a shitstorm.” “Reacted quickly and backtracked and some users lack the insight that they really have taken the wrong position.
