Donald Trump’s lawyers want one of the trials awaiting the former president to be completed in a couple of years.

This applies to the indictment in Washington DC that deals with Trump’s attempt to have the results of the 2020 presidential election annulled. Special prosecutor Jack Smith wants the trial to start in early January next year. Trump’s lawyers want to wait until 2026.

“Justice and a fair trial are in the public interest, not in a rush to judgment,” the documents filed with the court said.

The lawyers believe that the amount of documents in the case would take months to go through.

“It’s the entirety of Tolstoy’s ‘War and Peace,’ cover to cover, 78 times a day, every day, from now until jury selection.”

On August 28, a decision will be made regarding the trial date.

“The government’s proposed trial date (Jan. 2) is an appropriate balance between the defendant’s right to prepare a defense and the public’s strong interest in a speedy trial in the case,” Smith writes in his court filing.

The case is the most serious of the four different charges brought against the former president.

The trial in New York, which deals with accounting violations, is scheduled for March next year and the one in Florida, which deals with the handling of classified and sensitive government documents, is scheduled for May 2024.

The latest indictment, which concerns attempts to illegally influence the election in the state of Georgia, has not yet received a trial date.
