The effects of the assassination attempt on former US President and presidential candidate Donald Trump on July 13th continue. The US press reported that Secret Service Director Kimberley Cheatle resigned following the attempt that shook the world.
HE WAS SUBJECT TO CRITICISM
Following the shooting of former US President Donald Trump during an election rally, US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has resigned.
The AP reported Cheatle’s resignation based on an email he sent to U.S. Secret Service personnel.
“I take full responsibility for the security breach. Following the events, I have made the difficult decision to resign,” Cheatle said in an email.
CALLS FOR RESIGNATION HAVE INCREASED
Cheatle’s resignation came after he answered questions about the attempted assassination of former President Trump at a hearing in the House of Representatives yesterday.
Describing the assassination attempt on Trump as “the biggest operational failure the Secret Service has experienced in many years,” Cheatle said they held the necessary meetings within the service to fully clarify the incident and prevent such security lapses from occurring again.
During the four-hour-long session, members of Congress from both parties questioned Cheatle, leveling harsh criticism at him for failing to prevent the assassination attempt and calling on him to “resign immediately.”
Following intense criticism, Cheatle announced today that he was resigning.
Cheatle became the Director of the U.S. Secret Service in 2022.
