The future president of the United States, Donald Trump, believes that the EU benefits too much from its trade relationship with the United States.
In the United States, starting as president in January Donald Trump gives a preview of the financial goals of his season messaging service at Truth Social.
– I told the European Union that they have to correct their huge trade deficit with the United States by buying large quantities of oil and natural gas. Otherwise, there will be tariffs to the bone!, Trump writes.
Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz commented on Trump’s outburst with confusion. According to Scholz, Germany already buys 90 percent of its liquid natural gas from the United States.
During his presidency, Trump has promised to increase US oil and natural gas production to a “historically large” level. Now he seems to be looking for buyers for this production.
According to the European Commission in 2023, the United States was the EU’s largest export destination: about 19.7 percent of exports went to the United States. The value of exports was around 500 billion euros.
About 13.7 percent of the EU’s imports came from the United States. The United States was the EU’s second most important importing country after China, and the value of imports was around 344 billion euros.
