Trump sanctions, arrest warrants against Netanyahu and Putin … the ICC at a turning point – L’Express

Trump sanctions arrest warrants against Netanyahu and Putin the ICC

The International Criminal Court, installed in The Hague, in the Netherlands, is in the viewfinder of Donald Trump. Less than a month after his return to the White House, the Republican signed a presidential decree in which he announces sanctions against the ICC staff and against those who have provided their investigations. The reason? The issue of an arrest warrant in November 2024 against Benjamin Netanyahu, a very close to the American president, in November 2024.

The Israeli Prime Minister is not the only leading leader to be targeted by the ICC. This is also the case, since March 2023, of the Russian president Vladimir Putin.

Created in 2002, the International Criminal Court judges war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocides. He has long been accused of being interested in African countries. It is clear that this has been less the case for two years. International justice, which plays an increasingly important geopolitical role, is at a turning point.

To talk about it, Clément Daniez receives Mathilde Philip-Gay. Professor at Jean-Moulin-Lyon-III University, she is co-director of the Center of Constitutional Law. She is the author of Can we judge Putin? Posted by Albin Michel editions, in May 2023.
