US President Donald Trump continues his rhetoric to annex Greenland from Denmark. This time, the day before parliamentary elections is held on the island, he promises to make the Greenlanders rich.
“We will continue to keep you safe, as we have done since the Second World War. We are ready to invest billions with dollars to create new jobs and make you rich, ”Trump writes in a statement aimed at the island’s residents, on his platform Truth Social.
“And, if you choose, we welcome you to become part of the biggest nation in the world, USA!”, Trump continues.
Greenland goes to election on March 11, an election that is expected to be much about increased independence towards Denmark.
In his speech to the congress last week, Trump repeated that the United States will take control of the island “in one way or another”. “We are not for sale and cannot just be taken,” Greenland’s head of government Múte Bourup Ege replied then.
Trump has previously said that he does not exclude a military effort to take control of the island, which belongs to Denmark but has a far -reaching autonomy for several decades.
The United States has had military presence in Greenland since the Second World War. Denmark’s defense force is also on and around the island.
