Trump poses “a threat” to Europe

A victory for Donald Trump in the US presidential election in November would pose a clear threat to Europe, according to Christine Lagarde, head of the European Central Bank (ECB).

She refers to Trump’s years as US President, 2017-2021.

– By looking at how he did over the four years, it is a clear threat. It is enough to look at punitive tariffs, the attitude to NATO and the fight against climate change, she says in an interview with the state-run French television channel France 2, according to the Financial Times newspaper.

In the interview, the 68-year-old ECB chief also dismisses rumors that she is about to leave her current post to become French foreign minister. She says she has no plans to resign amid the fight against inflation.

– Not even to become queen of Prussia, she says.

She adds that the next interest rate change will probably be a cut by the ECB, but she does not want to speculate on when that might be.
