Trump may send military to Greenland

Donald Trump does not rule out economic or military pressure to seize Greenland, Danish media reports.
– No one knows if Denmark even has a legal right to Greenland. If they have it, they should give it up, says Trump at a press conference.

US President-elect Donald Trump does not rule out economic or military pressure to seize Greenland, the Panama Canal and Canada, Danish media reports.

– We need them for financial security. It may be that we have to do something, he says at a press conference in Mar-a-Lago.

“We need Greenland”

He also says that “no one knows” whether Denmark has a legal right to Greenland and that Denmark should give up the island.

– We need Greenland for our national security. It’s about protecting the free world, he says.

The president adds that the Greenlandic people would probably vote for independence or to become part of the United States. He also says that the US is considering imposing increased customs duties on Danish goods in connection with the Greenland issue.

Fredriksen: “Respect the Greenlanders”

Earlier today, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen commented on the twists and turns of Donald Trump’s claims about Greenland and pointed out clearly that the island is not for sale.

– I want to urge everyone to respect the Greenlanders as a people, it is their country we are talking about, said Frederiksen at a press conference.

Already during Donald Trump’s first term as president, he had his sights set on Greenland. In 2019, he stated that he wanted to buy the island, something that Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen dismissed as “absurd”. It resulted in Trump canceling a state visit to Denmark.
