Former US President Donald Trump attended the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. The convention attendees welcomed Trump with applause and screams, while the former President greeted them with a smile.
Trump, who attended the convention with a bandage on his ear, was also accompanied by his vice presidential candidate, JD Vance, whom he announced today.
Former US President Trump was attacked while addressing supporters at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday. One rally attendee was killed and two others were injured in the attack.
ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT ON TRUMP
The US Secret Service announced that the attacker, who fired several shots at the rostrum from a high place outside the rally area, had been neutralized.
The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) described the attack as an assassination attempt.
Following investigations, the FBI announced that the person who attempted the assassination and was killed at the scene was 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks.
INVESTIGATION IS ONGOING
The FBI has accessed the phone data of 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, who orchestrated the assassination attempt.
“The examination of the technological devices belonging to the attacker continues,” a statement was made.
However, no information about the reason for the assassination attempt or the attacker’s ideology could be obtained from the attacker’s phone calls or messages.
Searches of Crooks’ vehicle and home have been completed.
Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle also responded to claims that the 20-year-old attacker had been classified as a suspect some time before the assassination attempt.
“The process of searching, finding, identifying and eventually neutralizing the suspect took place in a very short period of time,” he said.
The Secret Service Director also confirmed that local officials were in the building at the time of the attack.
He stated that the security of the building was the responsibility of the local police.
Cheatle reported that he reached out to Trump after the assassination attempt but did not speak to him.
After the incident, he responded to calls for his resignation by saying, “I will not resign from my position.”
The Secret Service director is expected to testify before the House Oversight Committee on Monday.
On the other hand, the American The Washington Post wrote that the AR-15 semi-automatic rifle used in the assassination attempt was purchased by his father 11 years ago.
CBS News also reported that Crooks, the gunman, purchased 50 bullets before arriving at the rally where he carried out the assassination.
