Former President Donald Trump had a total of more than 300 secret documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate, according to the New York Times.
Former President of the United States Donald Trump is trying through the courts to block the Ministry of Justice’s investigation into the secret documents seized from the president’s mansion.
Trump wants the processing of the seized materials suspended until an independent lawyer can review the documents.
of the New York Times (you will switch to another service) according to the investigation, Trump had more than 300 secret government documents at Mar-a-Lago. Half of them were found when Trump handed over the documents to the authorities at their request in January. The Justice Department obtained more classified documents from Trump in June, and the rest were seized by the FBI in an August home search.
According to the newspaper, the large number of secret documents probably contributed to the fact that the FBI was granted an exceptional warrant to search the former president’s residence on a fast schedule.
Trump accuses scientists of political motives
The suit also demands from the Department of Justice a more detailed list of all items seized from Mar-a-Lago. Trump asks investigators to return all materials that would not be covered by a search warrant.
In the lawsuit, Trump repeats his own and his supporters’ claim that the FBI’s home search and seizure of documents were done with political motives.
The spokesman for the Ministry of Justice, on the other hand, repeated that the search warrant was granted by the federal court on the basis that a crime was suspected on the most probable grounds.
The home search conducted by the FBI was partly based on suspicions of the illegal storage of sensitive defense documents. Any illegal retention of these documents violates US espionage laws.
