Trump introducing customs against Canada, Mexico and China in February

US customs duties are expected to enter into force on Tuesday and if the countries respond with countermeasures, customs will be further increased, according to the decision.

For goods from Canada, it is a 25 percent duty on goods exported to the United States, with the exception of energy products that receive a customs duty of 10 percent.

Mexico receives customs duties of 25 percent for all goods and China gets 10 percent for all goods.

Customs fees will remain until the US government believes that the countries have taken sufficient measures to stop illegal immigration and the influx of drugs, including drug fentanyl, according to the decision as Canadian CBC News took part in.

Mexico and Canada respond

Both Mexico and Canada now come with countermeasures. Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says at a press conference that Canada in response will cover US goods with tariffs of 25 percent. And Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum in an X post that she instructed her finance minister to issue her own customs.

No customs against the EU yet

Economists have warned that customs can damage growth and push up inflation, as they are primarily paid by importers who can transfer the costs to consumers.

Trump also says he “absolutely” will impose customs duties against the EU.

“The European Union has treated us terribly,” he told reporters on Friday.

Trade between Mexico and China is increasing

At the same time, trade is growing strongly between Mexico and China.

SVT’s Latin American correspondent Tigran Feiler has visited the port of Manzanillo in Mexico, which is expected to increase three times in size in the coming years.

“The trade route at sea that is increasing most in the world is the one between China and Mexico,” says Brenda Estefan, expert in international relations with SVT.

– There is a red wave below the surface. The United States is starting to see this and worry.
