Jury selection begins Tuesday in the civil case brought against former President Donald Trump by author and journalist E. Jean Carroll.
The writer, who has worked for Elle magazine, among other things, sued Trump for defamation in 2019. She had accused him of rape in the 1990s, which he then denied. Trump said Jean Carroll lied to drum up interest in a book – dismissing the allegation that “she wasn’t his type”.
Donald Trump, through his lawyer Joe Tacopina, has requested not to be present during the trial in New York. According to Tacopina, Trump wants to refrain from appearing in court to avoid “a logistical chaos” in the city.
