On the occasion of having been indicted for the fourth time, Trump flew on Thursday night, local time, from New Jersey to Atlanta to turn himself in to the Fulton Detention Center. A crowd of supporters and counter-protesters gathered outside the building ahead of his arrival.
– We want to put his mugshot on a t-shirt. It will be seen all over the world. It will be a more popular image than the Mona Lisa, said 30-year-old Laura Loomer, a Republican former congressional candidate who hung out with other Trump supporters outside the detention center, according to Reuters.
Trump is accused of trying to influence the 2020 election results in the state of Georgia. He has previously been charged with accounting violations, withholding classified documents and trying to overturn the 2020 election results.
Fingerprints and mugshots
At Thursday’s arrest, he was treated “like any other inmate,” according to Fulton Police Chief Pat Labat. Trump had to leave fingerprints, take a mugshot, be measured and weighed.
He has not been forced to take a picture at any of his previous surrenders, but fake prison pictures have circulated online since the first indictment was presented in March of this year.
Expensive bail amount
Instead of being held in custody until the trial, Trump on Monday agreed to a bail sum of 200 thousand dollars (equivalent to about 2.2 million kroner) and other conditions of release. One of them is that he is not allowed to use social media. He is also not allowed to communicate with any of his eleven co-defendants or witnesses in the case.
Due to the bail being paid, the ex-president was able to walk out of the police building shortly after his arrival.
– I have not done anything wrong, he said in a short statement to reporters on the spot, reports CNN.
Moments after his mugshot became available to the public, Trump made a comeback to social media X, formerly Twitter, and posted the photo on his account. It remains to be seen whether the post violates the bail conditions.
