Trump asks Supreme Court to delay controversial Tiktok ban | News in brief

Tiktok appeals to US Supreme Court to stop forced selling

In April, Biden signed a law according to which the Chinese owner of the app, Bytedance, must sell Tiktok within a year or else the app will be banned in the United States.

Future President of the United States Donald Trump has urged the US Supreme Court to halt the progress of the controversial Tiktok ban.

The matter was reported by the US media, among others CNN.

In a plea to the justices on Friday, Trump said delaying the legislation would allow his administration to “pursue a negotiated settlement.”

Trump takes office on January 20, and the Tiktok law passed by Congress was supposed to come into force the day before, January 19, 2025.

A sitting President of the United States Joe Biden signed a law in April that requires Bytedance, the Chinese owner of the video app, to sell Tiktok within a year or face a ban on the app in the US.

Congress passed the law with support from both Republicans and Democrats in response to years of concern that Tiktok’s Chinese parent company poses a national security risk.

US decision-makers are worried that the application could be used to spy on Americans and influence opinion.

Trump’s request to delay implementation of the ban puts him at odds with the Biden administration, which defended the law in its own brief on Friday and warned of “serious” national security concerns about Tiktok’s continued operation in the United States.

US Supreme Court justices must weigh whether the Tiktok ban passed by Congress in April violates the First Amendment.

The court has already set aside two hours for hearing oral arguments on January 10, 2025.
