Truls Möregårdh’s proposal for the national team captain after Jörgen Persson

The legendary Jörgen Persson has quit as the Swedish national table tennis captain.
Now Olympic hero Truls Möregårdh has a suggestion for who he would like to see in the role.
– It would have been the best for me, he says to Radiosporten.

After his double silver medals during this summer’s Olympic Games in Paris, he has Truls Möregårdh22, received a completely different star status at home in Sweden. He is undoubtedly our biggest profile in world sport, which otherwise has not received much attention on television since JO Waldners, Mikael Appelgrens and Jörgen Persson glory days.

Truls has really ensured that there is ping-pong fever in Sweden again. But also Anton Källberg and Christian Karlsson stood for incredible performances as they were part of the men’s team that received a medal. Confederation captain Jörgen Persson had every reason to celebrate and enjoy himself after all the hard work.

But just a few weeks after the triumph, it suddenly became clear that Persson would step down as national team captain, much to everyone’s surprise. All of a sudden, the national team management now has to find a replacement for the icon.

“I have had five fantastic years with several titles and successes from several championships, not least the Olympics in Paris most recently. At the same time, it has also been tiring and I think it will be enough now. From my own experience as a player, I think the optimum for a coach is three to four years,” he wrote himself in a press release.

Trul’s wish for the future

Now the star Truls Möregårdh has spoken out on the question of who he would like to have as the new national team captain. He sees the chance to bring in a personal favorite, his older brother Malte Möregårdh27, who is actually his own coach.

– I myself have Malte, my brother, as a coach. Obviously I want to bring him with me to competitions, I have for many years now because he is the one who sees me every day. Dad also sees me every day. It would have been the best for me, he says to Radiosporten.

He also says what he himself considers to be important qualities to have as the national team captain for the Swedish table tennis national team. Brother Malte checks off several requirements on the list.

– He must be interested, above all in learning from us. I think Malte does. He is young and does not know everything himself about the coaching world. He also wants to develop and I also don’t think it’s too late to develop with the players to become a better coach, says Truls and continues:

– It’s a very fun job to have, I think. I hope that many people agree.

It would of course be exciting to see young Malte Möregårdh as the national team captain. He has evidently done a very good job with Truls.

Thank you for all the hard work you put in for Sweden, Jörgen. You are a true ping pong legend in this country.
