Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday thanked Canadians for their support after he and his wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau announced they were separating after 18 years of marriage.

– First, I want to thank everyone who has reached out in recent weeks with well wishes, personal messages and personal stories that have only been wonderful and positive, Justin Trudeau said during a press conference in Cornwall on Prince Edward Island.

The Trudeaus, who married in 2005 and have three children, jointly announced on Instagram in early August that they were separating.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, the couple will continue to meet and have joint custody of the children.
