A total of 4,618 new companies were created in Sweden during June, according to statistics from the Swedish Companies Registration Office, which the accounting company Visma Spcs has read. This is a decrease of 18 percent compared to the same period last year.

According to Boo Gunnarson, business expert at Visma Spcs, much is due to the increased uncertainty.

– It is rising interest rates and a very unpleasant war in Ukraine that are affecting emotionally. And it happens during a time when new companies are needed, he says.

Gunnarson compares with the time during the pandemic, when there was also great uncertainty but there were still many business opportunities and more people chose to start companies.

The interest rate affects

The policy rate was raised to 0.25 per cent in April, and then doubled to 0.75 per cent at the end of June. Several analysts also believe in further interest rate hikes.

In addition, the Riksbank has raised its inflation forecast to 7.6 per cent in 2022.

In Sweden, there are one million companies registered with the Swedish Companies Registration Office. The majority of them are small companies with small employees, according to Visma Spcs.

According to the trade association Företagarna, four out of five jobs are created in small and medium-sized companies. Because of that, Gunnarson sees the big loss as very worrying.

– New companies and new ideas help sustainable development, and protect against economic changes and crises, he says.

Particularly affected industries are those that have a great need for capital and more expensive capital goods. Those who shop regularly are not as affected, according to Gunnarson.

Norrbotten positive exception

The decrease is a reversal from the previous trend – during the first five months of the year, new registrations increased compared with the same period last year.

It also takes place in most of Sweden. Only three counties show a positive development, and Norrbotten in particular is going against the flow: In June, 25 per cent more companies were registered there compared with 2021. New business has also increased by 10 per cent on Gotland, and by 5 per cent in Jönköping County.

It fell the most in Kronoberg and Västmanland, where it decreased by 29 percent.

A total of 39,513 new companies were registered in Sweden during the first half of the year, which is 595 fewer than in the first half of 2021.

The decline means that the number of new companies after six months is now one percent lower than at the same time last year.
