In WoW Classic’s hardcore mode, evil people are hunting defenseless characters. Because they carry the most gold and valuable items with them. And the things are lost in WoW Hardcore after the death of the player.
Anyone who plays an MMO knows this: you usually don’t have enough space on your main character, so you create a bank character where you store your stuff. Most of the time, such heroes don’t get leveled because they’re just standing around in a city anyway.
In WoW, these characters often also serve as traders: they commute between banks, mailboxes and auction houses, buying and selling and hoarding important items and gold.
But a few nasty people now find it funny to kill such characters in WoW Hardcore. Because in WoW’s hardcore mode, a character remains dead forever and can no longer continue playing. At least not on the hardcore server.

How do the players proceed? Some people probably find it funny to kill such defenseless bank characters. This is now being reported by players on Reddit who are complaining about it, warning other people about it and explaining that you should keep your bank characters safe. Because officially the characters should be safe in big cities.
The nasty players use a debuff for their purposes that some enemies use in the Swamps of Misery. After a minute, the Rift Beacon debuff summons enemies that appear and then attack nearby targets. A little later they also attack bench characters and kill them with just a few attacks. The ability’s description states (via wowhead.com):
Marks an enemy with a tracking device. After 1 minute, 2 Lost Rift Travelers find the enemy and attack them. Lost Rift Travelers are unstable at the subatomic level and are unable to maintain their physical form after 1 minute.
Since such heroes are usually only level 1 and only wear cosmetic equipment, they usually have no chance against such opponents. Almost any enemy above level 11 can knock the life out of a benched character in one hit.
Why is the loss so tragic? Such bank characters are often worth significantly more than the main characters. The “bankers” carry the most gold and many valuable items with them, as they take care of all of the player’s trading and banking transactions.
Many players are now correspondingly worried and angry. Because, unsurprisingly, many people have no great desire to lose their valuable belongings to griefers who are having a mean time.
Since characters in WoW Hardcore also lose access to their bag and all loot, they can of course no longer trade. This can even be fatal for other players:
