A total of 59 people, including senior executives, technicians and civil servants, are on trial after the deadly landslide in Genoa, Italy four years ago. The brother-in-law claimed 43 lives.

It was on 14 August 2018 that 200 meters of Genoa’s famous “Morandibro” collapsed during rush hour and dozens of vehicles thus fell 50 meters to the ground.

According to prosecutors, the defendants knew that the bridge, built in the 1960s, was in danger of collapsing and that maintenance was reduced to save money. The risk of a landslide was already known in 2013, according to relatives of the victims.

The bronze designer had recommended recurring maintenance to keep the rust away given the high humidity. According to the designer, the concrete also required maintenance to withstand the effects of air pollution.

The defense claims that the bridge was incorrectly designed.

According to the news agency La Presse, the trial is expected to last over a year.
