It is not the first time that doctors have spoken out for safer ways of cycling. In 2021, a group of doctors already united in the think tank Doctors for Safe Cycling and called in an urgent letter to make a bicycle helmet mandatory. The Fietsersbond has always said that it is against a duty, because people may then cycle less. If people put on a helmet of their own accord, the union thinks it’s good, “but a duty could backfire”.
