New York City Mayor Eric Adams opened a press conference on Monday by rolling out a garbage can and placing a black garbage bag in it.

– Welcome to our trash revolution, he then tells the reporters on site, reports NBC New York.

Namely, a decision has been made that buildings with one to nine dwellings in them will no longer be allowed to throw the rubbish loose on the ground. Starting Nov. 12, rat-proof trash cans must be used, which the city will sell to property owners for $50 each. A similar requirement has been placed on business activities in the world metropolis since March.

The new regulation is estimated to apply to 70 percent of the city’s garbage.

– We are just catching up with what cities around the world are already doing, says Adams.
