Transparency International highlights the concentration of power in the hands

Transparency International Niger publishes its report on governance in the country since the coup d’état of July 26, 2023 which overthrew President Mohamed Bazoum. Nearly 15 months after the CNSP took power, which notably criticized the overthrown regime for its poor governance, the organization notes a concentration of powers in the hands of the Nigerien military and a militarization of civilian functions.

The CNSP dissolved Halcia shortly after taking power, to create another institution to fight corruption: the commission to combat economic, financial and fiscal delinquency (Coldeff). Its mission is the recovery of public assets misappropriated by former political and administrative officials. But Transparency International Niger notes that there are no legal proceedings in the event of reimbursement, which encourages impunity.

Furthermore, Nigeriens are still waiting for emblematic issues to be dealt with, such as those of Ministry of Defense or uraniumgate who caused a scandal under the presidency of Mahamadou Issoufou.

You have officers who are assigned to civilian duties. Governance takes a hit in the sense that you have executives who are not necessarily competent and who have not been trained for the task.
