Transgressive behavior in the hospital recognizable for Utrecht medical students

Response UMC Utrecht

Undesirable behavior: no one wants it. Yet it happens. Sometimes it is not possible to say anything about it, we (unconsciously) participate in it or we experience it ourselves. At the UMC Utrecht we believe that this should and can be improved. And everyone is involved: students, healthcare providers, researchers, all employees. In recent years we have had various campaigns about making undesirable behavior a topic of discussion. The most recent one is still running, which is the ‘This is us’ campaign. In that context, there will be a lot of attention for integrity next week. Everyone is invited to discuss: what does a nice workplace look like to you? And what behavior does or does not fit in with this? These are interesting questions that you may not simply ask each other. Other parts of the campaign include stimulating posters throughout the UMC that help get the conversation started, training and workshops for departments and an even stronger profile of the Undesirable Behavior Committee as a discussion partner. For students there are e-learning sessions, dialogue sessions and in January, for example, a lecture tour.

Most colleagues experience the UMC Utrecht as a pleasant and safe workplace. However, research shows that this unfortunately does not apply to everyone. We want to do something about that. With the campaigns we actively build an open, socially safe, stimulating and inclusive working and learning environment. An environment in which everyone feels comfortable and safe. We create a pleasant working and learning environment together. We do ‘This is us’ together.”
