The wait is a heavy burden for people in transition, the combination with unpleasant experiences in daily life makes it unfortunately unbearable for some. “We are losing people because of those waiting lists. The numbers of suicide among gender-diverse people are very high, because of what they experience in daily life,” says Uilhoorn. “The micro-aggression, that people call you different things and don’t accept it. If you have literally paused parts of your life because you cannot yet get the care you need to feel more comfortable with yourself, that are factors that trigger mental health problems.”
