Transatlantic is a historical mini-series based on a true story and consisting of 7 episodes. Available since April 7, 2023 on netflix, the series immerses us in the Marseilles of the 1940s, in the middle of the Second World War. While France is occupied by the Nazis, Varian Fry, an American journalist, and Mary Jayne Gold, a wealthy heiress, risk their lives to try to help refugees, mostly Jews, to flee the country. Many of them are artists wanted by the German forces. So, Transatlantic tells the story of a band of young heroes, French and foreign, working against the occupier to save lives.
On the casting side, the Netflix mini-series features several French actors: Lolita Chammah, the daughter ofIsabelle HuppertGregory Montel (who both starred in the series Ten percent), as well as Birane Ba (starring in the film I will always see your faces) and Ralph Amoussou (The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan). In addition, Cory Michael Smith (known in particular for the series Gotham) plays Varian Fry as we reunite with Gillian Jacobs (Community) as Mary Jayne Gold.
To make the mini-series TransatlanticAnna Winger (Unorthodox) was based on a story relatively unknown to the general public but true: Varian Fry (who has also been nicknamed “the American Schlinder”) and Mary Jayne Gold, with the Emergency Rescue Committee ), helped between 2,000 and 4,000 Jews and intellectuals to flee Europe during the Vichy regime.
