The problems with noise pollution started almost immediately when the new tram was put into use at the beginning of 2021. The province of Utrecht, owner of the tram, manually applied conditioning agent – a kind of grease – to the rails a few weeks after the problem arose. That was a labor-intensive solution, so it was eventually replaced by conditioning installations along the track. The trams are also equipped with an installation so that lubrication can be done from the tram.
The sixteen lubrication installations that were installed in 2021 have been replaced by twenty new installations in recent months. Because at the beginning of this year, in 2023, it turned out that the old lubrication installations were not yet having the desired effect.
