EU base: I support Trump’s plan

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen supports President Donald Trump’s quest for peace in Ukraine-but only with substantial security guarantees for the country.

“Supporting Ukraine is in Europe’s own interest,” says von der Leyen in written comments after his visit to Kiev on Monday.

“Weakness in our response will only lead to more wars on the European continent and other places. That is why I support President Trump’s initiative for Ukraine for a lasting peace settlement with security guarantees that are also backed by the United States, ”writes von der Leyen.

According to her, the EU’s strategy should be directed to further adopt its military and financial support for Ukraine, put pressure on Russia and gather support elsewhere in the world.

She also sees in front of her a “huge increase” of the EU’s defense spending, in three steps. First, the member states will be given the opportunity to invest in the defense without having to be punished by the EU’s tough budget rules. Step two are joint investments in, for example, air defense and drones, while step three is to increase access to private financing.
