Amersfoort is considered one of the busiest stations in the Netherlands, connecting the Randstad with the north and east of the country. The work on and around the station included the replacement of cables, switches, pipes and five kilometres of track. Many switches were around thirty years old and were due for replacement. The heating of the switches was also switched from gas to electric.
