The NS is diligently looking for new staff. There are currently 1100 vacancies open. There are still almost three hundred training places for drivers and conductors this year. There is also a shortage of mechanics, security staff and IT staff.
The consequences of the staff shortage are visible. From 13 June, fewer trains will be able to run between Rotterdam, Schiphol and Arnhem. The fear is that the NS will have to cancel trains on more routes due to a lack of employees.
