A student is kidnapped and turned into a cyborg, but instead of serving evil, he fights against his “creators”. Roughly speaking, this is the story of the Superhero franchise Kamen Rider, which is now 50 years old. This year the series continues with a new live-action feature film for those who have never heard of Kamen Rider to look forward to. You can read below why this is so.
A new trailer for Shin Kamen Rider was recently released.

After the monster hit: The superhero film is part of a trilogy worth seeing
Shin Kamen Rider is the third entry in the so-called Shin trilogy. In each installment, a different legendary Japanese franchise will be given a makeover. Part 1, Shin Godzilla, was one of the best monster movies in recent years and Part 2, Shin Ultraman, was a highly entertaining sci-fi adventure featuring gorgeous beasts.
One can watch the films without having seen any other part of the trilogy or even a minute of the original tokusatsu series. That’s what they call Japanese rows like Godzilla or Ultraman, who primarily compete for the favor of the audience with their effects. Kamen Rider is one of them.
As with the excellent kaiju film Shin Godzilla, Hideaki Anno is directing and writing the screenplay. The Creators of Neon Genesis Evangelion submitted the Godzilla film as a quasi-documentary criticism of how the Japanese earthquake and nuclear disaster was dealt with in 2011. His approach to Kamen Rider now feels a little more nostalgic. For example, individual scenes in the trailer reference the original series, which aired between 1971 and 1973. In any case, a retro vibe can also be felt in the trailer.
So what exactly is Shin Kamen Rider about?
Sôsuke Ikematsu (Shoplifters – Family Ties) plays Takeshi Hongo, a college student kidnapped by an infernal organization reassuringly titled Shocker (Sustainable Happiness Organization with Computational Knowledge Embedded Remodeling).
Kidnapping is part of Shocker’s business model because the organization turn the innocent into invincible warriors so-called Kaijin (to distinguish them from the monsters: Kaiju). This is done using cyborg technology. In the Kamen Rider storyline, the organization tries to create a grasshopper-human hybrid out of the student, and they succeed (hence the wide-eyed look), but Takeshi Hongo escapes. He uses his newly gained powers to put a stop to the villains of Schocker as a superhero.
