The cyanobacteria and bathers thrive under roughly the same conditions. If it’s sunny and calm, they accumulate at the surface, says Markus Lindh, marine biologist at SMHI. Since the weather has been a bit unstable recently, the algal bloom, or cyanobacteria, has not really taken off. But now the satellite images show that an accumulation of them is underway, including along the coasts of Gotland, Öland and Blekinge. It is high season for algae blooms, but when it is windy, the cyanobacteria are mixed into the water and do not affect those who bathe. If it now becomes calmer and more windless, they will come to the surface and also divide more. Some cyanobacteria can produce toxins that can be toxic to humans and animals. Vomiting is the most common symptom, but not everyone gets sick. Above all, it is small children and dogs that can get sick. But if you see a rhubarb cream-like cloud in the water, the recommendation is not to swim, says Markus Lindh.
