After a summer marked by local protests against over-tourism, several popular tourist destinations are now taking steps to find a balance between tourism revenue and the preservation of the local environment and culture.
719 million European rentals
According to figures from Eurostat, almost 719 million guest nights were booked in the EU via the online platforms Airbnb, Booking, Expedia Group and Tripadvisor last year, with Paris leading the EU capitals with over 19 million guest nights. In Central Europe, Budapest was most popular for short stays with 6.7 million guest nights, ahead of Vienna, Prague, Warsaw, Krakow and others.
