Poland’s Katarzyna Niewiadoma has won the women’s Tour de France for the first time in her career.
A completely crazy finale! At the end of a final hellish stage, it was Katarzyna Niewiadoma (Canyon//SRAM Racing) who won this Tour de France 2024 while the Polish woman was distanced very quickly in this stage, but held on to finally win this Tour by 4 seconds. “On the descent of Glandon I was able to pull myself together, to get my health back. I was lucky to have Lucinda Brand, I think we have to say a big thank you to Lidl-Trek because they did a great job for us. On Alpe d’Huez I knew I just had to set my pace and then give it my all in the last five kilometres and close the gap as much as possible. To be honest I stopped believing again. On the radio they were screaming so much in the last two kilometres. To be honest I had a really bad time on the last climb. I hated everything. And when I reached the finish line and I knew I had won the Tour de France it was crazy! It’s overwhelming because there are so many people I thank, starting with my husband, my family, the whole team, my coach – who worked so hard to prepare me for this – and my friends. This victory is dedicated to all the people who contributed to my victory!”
Big disappointment on the other hand for Demi Vollering who tried everything in this last stage which she won. “The Yellow Jersey was firmly on my shoulders. Then there was that stupid crash (on stage 5), which ultimately made me lose it. It’s very painful to know now that what I did today wasn’t enough. Normally, I would have been able to do it. But my back hurt a lot today. It was a big fight against myself in Alpe d’Huez. I tried to fight with everything I had. I know there’s an event in the Netherlands where a lot of people are fighting for a charitable cause, cancer research. Today I thought about that. I couldn’t give up, that’s what I did, but it wasn’t enough. I won two stages, finished 2nd once and 3rd once. I had a very good Tour de France. Only one day was a bad day.”
