England leave Chelsea for Super League rival Tottenham. The 28-year-old has signed a contract that runs until the summer of 2026.
“This is obviously a big day for me and I’m looking forward to getting started. Tottenham have high ambitions and I hope I can contribute and take the club where they want to go,” England told Tottenham’s website.
“Beth” England joined Chelsea from Doncaster in 2016 and has since accounted for 74 goals in 164 games for the London team. During her time at the club, she has collected nine major titles and the 2019–20 season was perhaps particularly memorable. In addition to victory in both the league and the league cup, England was awarded as the league’s best player.
One reason for the move is said to be the stiff competition in the attack at Chelsea. Through the club change, England, who took part in winning European Championship gold with the English national team this summer, hope to get enough playing time to earn a place in national team captain Sarina Wiegman’s World Cup squad this summer.
Tottenham is currently eighth in the league, 18 points behind league leaders Chelsea.
“It will definitely be a challenge and of course it will be new for me to change the blue shirt for the white after so long at Chelsea. But I am looking forward to it and I will enjoy it and accept the challenge with open arms ” says Bethany England.
