Total War: Everything about the new Warhammer DLC is just perfect

After a long dispute with the community, Total War: Warhammer 3 is doing really well again on Steam. Now there has been an update with new content. MeinMMO editor Benedict Grothaus has played the latest DLC and is absolutely in love.

I have to come out: Yes, I play Imperium. I resisted this for a long time, and for a long time I thought all the other factions were better – even Bretonnia. But since April 30th I’ve fallen for the Sigmar fanatics.

The reason? The new “Thrones of Decay” DLC. I’ve been looking forward to it for ages and before the release I predicted: I’ll play hundreds of hours of Warhammer again and ignore Manor Lords. I’ve already completed the first 30 and finished the first campaign.

By the way, I’m not the only one who feels this. Total War: Warhammer 3 is doing better than it has in ages:

  • With 74,000 players, Total War: Warhammer 3 has more players on Steam than it has in two years (via steamcharts).
  • Ratings have shot back up to 85% (via Steam). Shortly before, they were at a miserable 19% because of an argument.
  • The 3 new lords, which are available individually as DLC or as a package, all have between 88 and 92% approval. That’s a lot for paid content in Total War.
  • I bought all the DLCs right when they were released and have already tried them out. But even if I had stuck with the free update, I would have had fun. Developer Creative Assembly has really delivered here.

Free update & new paid content – everything fits

Thrones of Decay was released in two parts on April 30th: once in the form of the 3 DLCs, once in the form of the free update 5.0. The free update already has it all:

  • Balance adjustments for almost all factions
  • Revisions to various systems, such as the grudge for the dwarves
  • a free, new lord for Nurgle
  • I don’t actually play dwarves, but with the new book there is the possibility of recruiting other legendary lords in the campaign via confederation. This gives the whole game a completely new dynamic.

For me, the heart of the matter is still the DLCs, especially Elspeth von Draken. The new empire commander combines magic with artillery and relies on strong spells and black powder. This is completely crazy:

  • She can teleport across the empire via the Gardens of Morr and really attack opponents. She can even recruit units through the gardens.
  • Elspeth rides a crimson dragon that can wipe out entire units with the push of a button.
  • The commander herself casts death magic, one of the best types of magic to kill enemy heroes and leaders.
  • Your faction, Whisenland & Nuln, has access to special Amethyst units – these are magic-enhanced black powder units such as ironborn and rocket mounts. Black powder units were already a strength of the Empire.
  • All units that work with gunpowder are reinforced by the artillery school. Basically an additional research tree just for Elspeth.
  • But the best thing is the new unit: landships. And yes, that’s as stupid as it sounds. A battleship that simply has a few wheels mounted on it and that simply plows through the battlefield armed with heavy artillery, heavy armor and spear throwers. Pretty literally.

Normally I play the megalomaniacal chaos dwarves, but just for these landships I’ve now committed myself to the Empire. I haven’t had this much fun in live battles in ages.

Manor Lords will stay put until it’s finished

Just to be clear, I’m not bashing Manor Lords here. The game is fantastic and colleague Maurice Weber rightly thinks that it is THE development game of the future. For me, what’s in it just isn’t enough for long-term motivation.

Sure, building villages is cool and the battles are entertaining. But after about 10-20 hours I just saw everything. The content is extremely limited, no building can be expanded further than Tier 3 and the tech trees are not even half finished.

Manor Lords will be great once it’s complete. The boss himself says that the building game is not a competitor to Total War. Nevertheless, both games appeal to a very similar target group. Me, for example. And I’ll stick with Total War now until Manor Lords has more content.

Total War is doing well again after a nasty argument

Total War has had major problems recently. In 2023 there was an enormous dispute with the community over various price increases while at the same time lacking quality. This is where the nasty crash in reviews on Steam came from.

Creative Assembly therefore made a U-turn at the end of the year and bowed to the community – including an apology and gifts:

Personally, I didn’t think the DLC for Warhammer was that bad at the time, but I was obviously pretty alone in my opinion. Now, with Thrones of Decay, the developers have definitely done everything right. Even MeinMMO author Schuhmann wants to watch Total War: Warhammer 3 again:

Two years ago I wasted €60 on a game on Steam: Now it should finally be good

The newest part, Pharaoh, is still doing rather poorly with few players and mediocre ratings. But now there was a complete expansion for free, something that fans didn’t expect at all. So something is probably going on here too.

And now… I never thought I would say this, but… excuse me, I must go unite the Empire and lead it to power.

It’s actually strange that Total War: Warhammer 3 appeals to me so much. I was never interested in the series, but Warhammer is my absolute favorite universe. The only thing missing is that something that has long been unnecessary is finally announced: In a perfect world, the biggest MMORPG today would be World of Warhammer (and yes, I know, I had a beard back then – thanks!)
