John Tavares scored his 400th NHL goal in tonight’s game between Toronto and Pittsburgh. Toronto won the away game 5–2.

— It makes so much more sense (to pass 400 goals) when you do it on a night when we get two points and the whole group plays so well – everyone contributed, said Tavares, who is also noted for an assist, after the game.

Tavares is the 107th NHL player to pass 400 goals and the 13th currently active. Washington’s Alex Ovetchkin is the current active player with the most goals – 788.

Matt Murray, who won the Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh in both 2016 and 2017, made 35 saves in the Toronto goal.

— I’m having a great time, I’m really having fun, said Murray, who hasn’t played for a while due to an injury.

The game was his first in Pittsburgh since being traded to Ottawa in October 2020.

— I had great fun tonight. It was great to be back.

William Nylander had a goal and an assist for Toronto and Rickard Rakell had a goal for Pittsburgh.

Sweden’s Elias Pettersson had a goal, set up by Oliver Ekman-Larsson, and an assist in Vancouver’s 5–4 win over Buffalo on the road. Buffalo’s Rasmus Dahlin is credited with an assist.

New Jersey’s Jesper Bratt also had a goal and an assist as his Montreal was defeated on the road.
