Toronto woman charged with extorting Sarnia resident: police

The accused threatened to distribute the images online to the complainant’s friends and family unless money was paid.

A 24-year-old Toronto woman has been charged by Sarnia police with extortion after an alleged threat involving the distribution of intimate images, police say.

The complainant and the accused initially met through her online advertisement for sexual services. They engaged in a personal arrangement, through which, over time, the accused obtained intimate images and personal information, police said Wednesday.

The accused threatened to distribute the images online to the complainant’s friends and family unless money was paid. After a while, the complainant called police, they said.

The accused allegedly demanded a large amount of money from the complainant and traveled to Sarnia Monday to collect it, but was arrested when she got there.

A 24-year-old Toronto woman is charged with extortion and four counts of failing to comply with a recognition and has been held for a bail hearing, police said. The recognition was linked to a long list of serious charges in the Greater Toronto Area including attempted murder, they said.

“Crime today is not constrained by municipal boundaries. Our city is impacted by criminal elements both within and outside of our community, across a spectrum of offenses,” Sarnia police Chief Derek Davis said in Wednesday’s statement. “The SPS enjoys excellent relationships with our partner law enforcement agencies that include lawful sharing of information and joint investigations.”
