Environment Canada has issued a tornado warning for Stratford, Mitchell, Listowel, Milverton and most of Perth County.
The warning, which was posted just before 5:30 pm, is the result of a severe thunderstorm that Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking across the region that has the potential of producing a tornado.
The thunderstorm is moving east across the region at 55 kilometers per hour, Environment Canada officials said. In addition to a tornado, Environment Canada warned the storm could create damaging 90-kilometre-per-hour wind gusts.
In the case of this kind of severe weather, take cover immediately. If you hear a roaring sound or see a funnel cloud, swirling debris near the ground, flying debris or any threatening weather approaching, take shelter right away.
Go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows, such as a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet. Leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary or free-standing shelters, and move to a strong building if you can. As a last resort, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris.
Tornado warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing tornadoes.
